I’ve never really wanted to go camping, but a couple days ago I was forced to, and what I experienced changed my mind completely.
The day before our trip, I was reluctant to go because of mosquitoes. They have a tendency of finding and absolutely annihilating me. Sometimes when I go to the park, I come back home swollen and red, not from allergies.
But by that time it was too late. Our bags were packed, our car ready, and the next day, a 3 hour drive in front of us.
Chapter One: The Drive
Other than a lot of horses and cows, there really wasn’t anything about the drive to the campsite. Oh, and before I forget, we were going to Mikisew Provincial Park. So on we went, driving through the country, with a whole lot of chips and water.
We arrived around 5:00 in the evening. I saw my friend and immediately started playing Nintendo with him.
Chapter Two: Roasting Marshmallows
With our tent set up and mattresses inflated, we were good to go at night. I had already gotten my first few visits from our little flying friends, the mosquitoes, after dinner. I was feeling fairly low, as I had been crushed by my friend at Risk, a world domination game.
The one thing that turned my mood around was roasting marshmallows. They were sweet, fluffy and delicious. And yes, I did burn one, but that was only because the fire suddenly roared to life and ate the marshmallow before I could. It was a good night, with tons of shooting stars and maybe even the glow of an aurora(we were fairly up north)!
But at one point all fun has to come to an end, and I had to go to sleep.
Chapter Three: Surviving the Night
I had to kill at least 5 mosquitoes before going to bed, mainly because someone had left the tent open for a little bit of time. The other reason was because I wanted peace of mind that I wouldn’t be bitten by any creepy-crawlies at night.
Sleeping in the wilderness is a wild experience (I’m not joking at all). There are noises that you don’t know, rustling of trees (or is it an animal?), and so much more. But with luck, if you manage to go into deep sleep, you won’t be scared or hear any of these noises, which is exactly what happened to me.
Chapter Four: Breakfast in the Middle of Nowhere
Having breakfast during camping is one of the most normal things ever. Actually, having any meal during camping is like that. Think of it as a picnic. Just with a lot more trees and insects.
On the menu is croissant with Nutella and bananas with a side of eggs. It’s better than you would expect! And no bugs are attracted to it as well. So win-win!
Before I forget, we had wifi at camp so everyone was on their devices and I was watching YouTube.
Chapter Five: I Tried to Drown My Friend
Nearly an hour or two after breakfast, we went to the beach. With us was an inflatable and inflated boat! It was with this that I wanted to drown my friend with.
Long story short, when we got into the boat, I pretended to fall into the water (I know how to swim in water 5 metres deep) and got to the underside of the boat. Next, I flipped it over and sat on it.
But if you watch movie myths busted, you would know that you can breathe under a boat. I knew that, so again I fell into the water and grabbed my friend’s leg. He panicked, and his reaction was priceless🤣.
We played in the water for about 3 hours before heading back to camp for lunch.
Just Another Meal… Or is it? (This isn’t a chapter)
For lunch we had delicious chicken sliders, a recipe by someone I guess. We ate while playing Risk on the Switch, and I enjoyed a lot.
Chapter Six: A Tale of Burgers and Marshmallows
After lunch and a bunch of Nintendo, it was time for dinner. We were having burgers and marshmallows for dessert. I took one and a half. And I ate 10-20 marshmallows. Sadly, they all died in the process. Let them not be forgotten. (R.I.P 🍔&[Enter Marshmallow Emoji Here])
Chapter Seven: Repeat and Run
Wake up, eat breakfast, eat 2 burgers, and leave. That was what happens on the last day of our trip. There were some complications though. Let me explain.
First, a lot of mosquitoes somehow invaded our tent. Second, a frog invaded our tent! And third, we were delayed because our camping neighbours somehow got a bird stuck in their tent!
Anyways, I was sad to go. It was one of the best trips of my life, but somehow it doesn’t even come close to Mexico 2023 (and maybe even Mexico 2024). We went home, went to sleep, and started our normal lives once again.
